Global Sun Oven and Solar Cooking in Emergencies

A Sun Oven is very portable, weighing only 21 pounds. Often, during emergencies, families have to move quickly. The Sun Oven is lightweight and carries like a suitcase. Other needed items like paper towels or light bedding could be carried in the unit.

Sun Ovens will cook any food without dangerous flammable fuels and fire. An uncontrolled fire can turn an emergency into a disaster. A Sun Oven uses no fire to cook food so there is no chance of accidental fire. Unfamiliar gasoline or propane camp stoves can be cumbersome to use in emergencies. It is easier for a cook or a bystander to get burned from falling pots or wandering hands during use. Cooking fires must be tended to constantly and during stressful emergency situations the cook can easily get distracted. This creates an increased burn risk to a child or an adult.

Cooking fuels do not have to be stored for emergencies . Families concerned about preparedness will have greater peace of mind if dangerous fuels do not have to be stored in their homes or garages. The local fire department will also be grateful.

The Sun Oven is safe to use in emergency situations, and every day. While the oven itself will get very hot, the glass and reflectors do not. The glass lid may get hot to the touch (140 degrees F.) but it will not burn the skin when casually touched. The reflectors do not give off heat. Using the Sun Oven for cooking food gives greater peace of mind than using fire or briquettes. See the article: Safer Cooking with Solar.

Smoke from cooking fires, barbeques and stoves can travel great distances and advertise to anyone, including the bad guys, that you are cooking food. Often in emergencies predators seek out people who are prepared. They somehow feel others owe them supplies or food, often at great cost to their victims. Though most people work together when disaster strikes, many have learned through sad experience that there is always somebody who feels they can take what they want, no matter what!

Can you think of a better way of cooking food for your family during emergencies? Solar cookers won't work at night and on cloudy days so some thought should go into other back-up cooking plans.
We suggest getting familiar with the ease of solar cooking before it is needed in an emergency.

Bread baking in my Sun Oven in Las Vegas

Solar Cookers produce no smoke during the cooking process . A solar oven produces very little smell because moisture is retained in the food. It is the moisture molecules from the food released into the air that we smell when baking in a regular oven. The gas or electric burner constantly replaces air in the oven and the moisture is therefore released into the room, drying out the food. Solar cookers only use sunlight to cook food and smoke is not a byproduct. When the food retains its moisture it is less likely to burn.

Carries like a suitcase, weighs 21 lbs.

Solar cookers can also pasteurize water in about 1 hour (instead of boiling for 10 minutes using needed fuel). A simple device called a WAPI, water purification indicator , is normally used. Solar cookers can sterilize medical instruments in an emergency.

The Sun Oven is probably one of the most useful preparedness items for emergencies. Along with a good water filter, food storage supplies, some clothing and bedding, a solar cooker could prove to be invaluable.

Solar cookers can bake bread, cook meats, cook vegetables, rice, etc. for everyday use or in emergencies. Food does not stick to pans, does not need stirring, and cooking pots can be cleaned easily (without water in an emergency). Food does not need to be constantly watched, as food does not usually burn if cooked longer than normal. Food taste's better because moisture is retained. Food is moister, better tasting and more nutritious food.

An example: People attract attention to themselves by use noisey generators during the aftermath of a hurricane. Thugs are listening, and know who has a generator. These generators are sometimes taken even while they are running. See Gas Generators. The Sun Oven is not going to advertise to anyone that you are cooking food.

When solar cooking, food is less likely to burn, does not need stirring and will not stick to the pan. This allows for easier clean-up, saving precious water and lessens stress in emergencies. There are many types of solar cookers available and we will preview them on this site. You can even make a simple cardboard cooker that works. We recommend the Global Sun Oven for emergency and every day use because it is most similar to everyday baking in your regular oven.
